Good, Great or Garbage: "Halloween Is Here" by Lonesome Wyatt & The Holy Spooks
HALLOWEEN IS HERE!
It's that special time of year, boils and ghouls. You can feel the change in the air, that special electric charge that can mean only one thing: Halloween has arrived. And Halloween isn't just one measly day at the end of October; it's a whole glorious season that starts after Labor Day weekend and ends... let's just say sometime before Thanksgiving. Of course for some of us, that wonderful season never really ends. We may close our eyes for a moment on a hot July afternoon and find ourselves surrounded by the inviting sight of glowing Jack-O'-Lanterns and vintage die-cut decorations. For some of us, Halloween is our happy place, and Halloween is forever. To help celebrate this most wonderful time of the year, we've decided to break our bi-weekly schedule to present to you, dear listener, with the gift of the first of two special episodes that commemorate the glory and splendor of Halloween.
This first episode is also the first installment of a new series we're trying out, a little thing we're calling Good, Great or Garbage. The idea behind this particular series is to take a closer look at certain albums, movies, TV series, etc. old and new, and break them down a bit, deciding whether these works are, well... good, great, or garbage. It's sort of a self-explanatory title, I suppose. And this first episode focuses on 2013's "Halloween Is Here", a somewhat obscure love letter to vintage holiday novelty albums by the somewhat obscure underground country artist Lonesome Wyatt & The Holy Spooks. Does the album deliver? Or does it miss the mark? You'll have to tune in to find out. Check out the episode below, or find us on Anchor, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts or Stitcher, so choose your own adventure and let the spirits of the season into your black hearts.
That's it for now, but come back next week for our conclusion to this Halloween celebration with a deep dive into 2013's WNUF Halloween Special, a found footage favorite among seasonal aficionados. Until then, you can join in the conversation by leaving a comment below, sending us an email at dickbloodd69@gmail.com, or finding us on Twitter or Instagram. We're all over the place, and we would love to hear from you. How are we doing? What can we do to improve things around here? And what are your personal favorite Halloween musical hits? Tell us everything! Thanks for stopping by, and stay spooky!
I'd never heard this album before, or even this Lonesome Wyatt guy, but based on the clips in the episode and your enthusiasm, I listened to this on Amazon music, and I have to say I generally liked it. There's a sort of cheapo holiday vibe to the whole thing that I can get behind. I may have to listen to more Lonesome Wyatt because of this, so if it sucks I have you guys to blame. But this was a good pick for a Halloween music pick and I thought the show was okay too. Good job.
