The 2022 TRAPPO Music Awards Survey! (Poll Closed)

(The poll is now officially closed. Thanks to everybody who voted! -D)

We've reached the end of the year at long last, and that means it's time for a big awards blowout! Every music blog and their grandmother is handing out awards right about now, and we here at TRAPPO are no different. We've got a big awards show coming up in a few weeks, but we can't put it all together on our own, dear listener. We need your help to put on this shindig! What help, you may be wondering? Why, we need you to choose the winners, of course. Posted below you will find a lengthy survey with a list of categories and nominees, and all you have to do is pick your winners. That's it. There are six nominees in each category, and you just pick one winner per category and click that "submit" button at the bottom of the survey. You've done this before, so I shouldn't have to explain how these surveys work.

There are sixteen categories in total, and we'd love for you to vote on each of them, so let's break them down, shall we? By the way, links to listen to each release are below. Just click the record titles and indulge, dear listeners!

  1. Aura by Hatis Noit isn't just my favorite album of 2022, it's one of the coolest albums I've ever heard in my life. That's my pick.

  2. I Am Your God from MOTHERMARY is pure synth bliss. My pick for record of the year.

  3. Decent picks, overall. My choices tend to be a bit more mainstream in general, so I haven’t heard some of the nominees, but your show did introduce me to Chrystabell, Kee Avil and Dungeon Weed, and I like those artists a lot these days, so I voted for them wherever I could.

  4. I have to support my close personal friend (whom I've never met) Katie Alice Greer, who blew the top of my head off with "Barbarism" this year. Thanks for giving the album some love on your show, and thanks for your "Notes On Barbarism" Dustin. Your notes gave me a greater appreciation for the album, and it introduced me to the work of Dorothea Lasky, which is an awesome bonus. But if I'm being honest, all the nominations for "The Single Most Amazing Record Of 2022" deserve to win. So I'm ultimately cool no matter who snags the trophy. Whoever wins, I win! Can't complain about that, TRAPS. I can complain about "Fossora" not being nominated in the biggest category, but I won't. You made your choices, and we had a lot of great music this year.

    KEEP IT WEIRD!

  5. Great picks overall, and it was actually hard for me to pick my winners in most of the categories, so thanks for the conundrum. I had to seriously weigh these choices, and I honestly didn't expect that, so kudos to you, TRAPS. I actually fucking stressed over this survey. But the good news is I won't be disappointed in most cases if my personal picks don't win. So that's nice. I guess I will be slightly disappointed if Honeybee Table At The Butterfly Feast doesn't win, because for whatever reason that slice of madness means a lot to me. The other nominees are absolutely phenomenal, so my disappointment will surely be outweighed by the joy of seeing Kee Avil or Katie Alice Greer win.

It might not be the single greatest record of 2022, but I had to write-in Asha's Awakening by Raveena. Mostly because I wanted to bring it to your attention, if for no other reason. I adore the music, and I think it's worthy of consideration in any reputable blog's year-end rankings, but I'm surely biased. It's a trippy, spaced-out concept record about a Punjabi princess drifting through the cosmos on a journey of self-discovery, and it's so fucking GOOD. So that might be my pick for best record of 2022. Give it a listen, TRAPS. Tell me I'm wrong.

And you didn't nominate Scene Queen's BIMBOCORE (1 or 2) for Best EP? Where's your sense of fun? Your lust for life? Have you no joy? For shame. I kid, of course, but seriously what the fuck is wrong with you both?

In all seriousness, it's a good list of nominees, and if it were my own list, I would only make a few tweaks here and there, so that's pretty solid as far as I'm concerned. Good job keeping it weird. I knew I stuck around here for a reason. You're the best.

    Sometimes.

Here's to a 2023 filled with fantastic fucking music to distract us all from our impending doom!

  6. As far as your Metal/Doom choices, maybe Defacing God goes "hardest", but SteppenDoom is so avant-garde and playfully sinister that it got my vote. That might not be the "correct" choice, but it's the choice my heart made. My pick for "the single greatest record" is After The Head Rush by Art d'Ecco, because "I Was A Teenager" and "Erasure" twist a knife in my heart in such a wonderful way. And my favorite experimental album is Fossora from Bjork because it's Bjork and she deserves that award and at least a few others. Why did you only nominate Fossora in one category? That feels like a misstep to me, but it's your awards show, TRAPS. You do what feels right, and I respect it. I'm looking forward to the eventual episode. As long as it comes out in a timely manner and not in April or something. Happy New Year.

  7. (Blogger's on a roll deleting posted comments, so here's one from today originally posted by long-time friend of TRAPPO, Archbishop Mack. What a fucking mess this system is. -D)

What a cornucopia of musical wonders you have given us from which to choose this year, TRAPS. "As The Blood Of God Bursts The Veins Of Time" was my pick for best EP because it's Hunter Hunt-Hendrix continuing to evolve the sound of Liturgy in fascinating new directions. My synthpop pick is Space Island from BROODS. The heavy emotions of Georgia Nott's internal life following her divorce inform every wonderful direction this album takes. Although I do have to take issue with the category in which the album was nominated. Space Island is really more electronica than synthpop, but maybe that's a nitpick. I would personally switch Space Island with I Am Your God in the electronica category.

Bringing any attention to ooodisea and her record "O' dimness SOUL HOME" is a good thing in my book. Lush, haunting soundscapes with elements of erotica and horror and mind-expanding madness. That might actually be my personal pick for record of the year. It just makes sense to me. The Resurrection Of Lilith from Defacing God is my metal pick. Righteous rage and unrelenting darkness. I was surprised to see "Aura" from Hatis Noit nominated twice in the survey, considering I've never heard you TRAPS discuss the music of Hatis Noit at all this year. It's a wonderful surprise, and I hope that means you may discuss the record at length in the future. I voted for "Crease" from Kee Avil as my record of the year, because it's just great. You said it all in your episode, and I agree with everything. It's a horror movie for the ears. I love it. "Crease" wins. I can't wait to hear the final results. I'm very excited.

    Happy holidays, TRAPS.

  8. You forgot to nominate Electric Cowboy from Boulevards for “single most amazing record of 2022”, so I did the write-in thing for you. You’re welcome. But that “Crease” shit is fucking wild, too. So I voted for that descent into madness. And Dungeon Weed is a journey and a half. Not enough love for Dungeon Weed out there. 👍🏾

  9. I live in Toronto, and I saw Kee Avil perform live in a local dive bar a few years ago. It was the weirdest damn thing I ever saw. Real stripped down and messed up horror music. I recognized some of the tunes from Crease, but they weren’t fully formed. It was nuts. I wondered if I had gotten really drunk without knowing it, or maybe I was having a waking nightmare. I mean this as a compliment. I love this music. Crease is my album of the year.

  10. Laurel Hell by Mitski is the coolest record that dropped in 2022. A grave omission.

  11. The EYE Of The ICOSAHEDRON all the way!!

  12. I forgot to write-in Bjork’s new album when I voted so I just voted again but left all the categories blank except for my write-in. Sorry!

  13. I just voted for CREASE wherever I could, except in the “experimental” category. Album of the year material without a doubt. A truly phenomenal piece of art. I admit seeing Bjork nominated in the “experimental” category kinda bugged me, then I listened to “fossora” and holy shit. That amazing stuff is trippy as hell, and it absolutely belongs there. I’m really surprised it didn’t rate for a “most amazing record” nomination.

    Strong field this year, TRAPS.

  14. Thanks for bringing Barbarism to my attention with your show. I love the record and I’m rooting for this one to win.

  15. No hip-hop category? No pop? R&B? Some of the nominees might count, but where are the categories? This isn’t comprehensive. Weird and Experimental categories but no hip-hop. That’s redundant and stupid.
