The Frank Zappa Can(n)on!

Welcome back, dear listeners! It's time for the final episode of TRAPPO for the year! And since it's our last episode of 2023, we figured we might as well go big. And what's bigger than Frank Zappa? Many listeners have been asking us to cover this legendary musical pioneer from the beginning, and smack dab in the middle of our third season, we're finally going to do just that. Because TRAPPO cares. So how are we covering Frank Zappa, you may well ask? We're building our very own Frank Zappa Can(n)on! That's extraordinarily exciting! The man gets his own can(n)on! A can(n)on within the existing can(n)on! What a rare distinction!

So without any further ado, just go listen to the show. You can find it below, or find TRAPPO on Apple, Google, Pocket Casts, RadioPublic, Spotify, The other Spotify, and Amazon, so choose your own adventure and let's make the water turn black...

Join the conversation! Tell us why we fucked up and didn't even bother talking about any of his best albums, or how we callously glossed over the full breadth of his true musical genius, or just complain about our lame, reedy voices. Whatever's on your mind, really. If you've got thoughts to share, you may share them below in a lengthy comment. That would be cool. Tell us all about how we're not true Frank Zappa fans. Or you could leave us some positive comments. We appreciate those, too. You know what else we appreciate? Emails. From you. So send us one. Send us several emails. If you've got cool thoughts to share with TRAPPO, send those thoughts in an email. Our address is trapposhow@gmail.com, so click away and send us some emails. We'll be your friend for life if you send us an email. That's how much we love emails. Have you ever been excited to receive an email? It's like Christmas morning for us whenever we find a fresh email in our inbox.

We're also all over that social media stuff, whatever that is. Do you understand social media? TRAPPO doesn't, but TRAPPO is there. You can follow TRAPPO on Instagram, BlueSky, and Threads, so check us out on those social media platforms if you are ever so inclined. Follow TRAPPO, and TRAPPO will follow you. Have you ever seen It Follows? That's us! We're It Follows! Only we probably won't murder you if we finally catch up to you. Probably not. You'll have to follow TRAPPO to find out.

Happy holidays, everybody! And thanks for listening!

  2. You can't tell me that Frank Zappa made music like this and wasn't constantly high on something. I refuse to believe it.

  3. Just putting everything in you cannon is a cheat. You losers can't put the work in and really analyze Zappa's work and make some hard choices to see what belongs and what doesn't? That sucks. How could this episode be an hour long and not even scratch the surface of the man's catalogue? It's like getting tube socks for Christmas, only worse because you can wear the socks. And The Grand Wazoo doesn't belong in anybody's cannon.

  4. This episode really needed more uncle meat on its bones. You kept saying you weren’t going to go in depth and you meant it, but that was a mistake. Maybe now that you’ve gotten the introduction out of the way you can actually do a real Zappa episode. Joe’s Garage is as good a place to start as any.

And I started reading the Southern Reach trilogy on Kindle after the recommendation. I’m almost don’t with Annihilation and I’m really enjoying it so far. Thanks for that, TRAPDOOR.

  5. Zappa's music is a journey, not a destination. It takes time to delve into his vast and bizarre world, but for those who do, the rewards are endless.
