Good, Great or Garbage: Tirzah's "Colourgrade"
Welcome back, dear listeners! It's Friday, and that means it's time for another episode of the show that talks about stuff on purpose! And this time around, we're looking at 2021's Colourgrade, the sophomore album from English experimental pop artist Tirzah. Is it worth your time? That's what we're trying to figure out.
In the interest of full disclosure, and if you haven't listened to our second installment of TRAPPO's Mail Bag, the following discussion was originally the first part of our Bad For Good episode, but it was running long so I ended up removing the Colourgrade talk from the final cut. But due to interest from a motivated listener, we recently recorded new bookending segments and I cut a short, stand-alone episode together. So here you go, Jesse. The episode is available on Anchor, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts and Breaker, so choose your own adventure and give it a spin.
We'd love for you to join the discussion! Leave a comment below telling us what you think of Colourgrade and leave some suggestions for potential future topics you'd like to hear us tackle on the show. Of course, if you're feeling more verbose, you can always send us an exciting email and we'll be glad to address your dispatches in a future installment. We also invite you to visit the official TRAPPO Instagram feed for the complete experience.
By the way, were you aware that we're currently curating the ultimate B-52's mixtape? If you'd like to contribute to the final product, just head on over to the official discussion page and nominate your favorite B-52's songs in the comments! We're accepting submissions until March 1st, so you need to hurry up if you want your voices heard on the upcoming episode!
That's it for now, so thanks for listening and we'll catch up next week!
What the hell am I even listening to here? Is it some trance/club shit? Noise for dancing? Because I don't mess around with that music. I'm not a club kind of person. Maybe if you're on molly this music will rock your fucking socks off. WAP is a whole other story, however. You called it camp, and I think that's right on the money. Over the top ridiculousness with all the subtlety of a chainsaw. That's high praise.
ReplyDeleteHave you ever heard of a movie called The Spine Of The Night? It's an animated fantasy thing I rented on YouTube a few days ago. One of my online friends recommended it to me because I like a lot of Ralph Bakshi's stuff, and this is definitely similar in some respects. For one, I don't know why anybody in the 21st century would rotoscope an animated movie. That's just weird, labor intensive shit that you'd have to be crazy to attempt. I know Richard Linklater did that with A Scanner Darkly, but he had an actual team of animators, and apparently the directors of this movie had like two other people. Crazyness.
The movie's really ambitious, but kind of a mess. Bloody adult animation isn't that common, at least outside of Japan, so I'll always give it a shot, and I don't regret watching this one, but it wasn't terribly exciting for me. Weird that Patton Oswalt was one of the voices in the movie, and his character wasn't played for laughs at all. His vocal performance is goofy because it just sounds like Patton Oswalt trying to sound serious and that just makes it funnier. You can't take that voice seriously. Maybe in Ratatouille he nailed some of the serious moments, but he was a cartoon rat that controlled a cook's hands by pulling his hair underneath a big hat, so it's a little different.
Cool, thanks for putting this out. I did listen to part of COlourgrade again a bit earlier, and I've come to the conclusion that it just doesn't work for me. I want it to, but most of the music is just too droning and off-putting and I can't connect with it. That's a shame, but I suppose I would be interested in hearing what she does next, as long as she tries to grow as an artist and not just make more of the same music that makes up Colourgrade, because that feels like it would be a waste of time.
ReplyDeleteAnd I have heard W.A.P. I think it's a little too explicit, just pushing buttons and trying to be provocative for its own sake. But that's just my opinion. I'm not into Cardi B and I'm not familiar with Megan The Stallion, so it's just not my kind of music. Thanks for releasing the episode, though. I appreciate hearing your thoughts on Tirzah's album.
I actually kind of liked Colourgrade, at least what I heard on your podcast, and I'm curious enough to stream it at some point. I guess it can't be for everybody and that's just fine.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of music that can't be for everyone, you guys should check out some Frank Zappa stuff for the show. It's surprising to me that people just don't talk about Zappa anymore considering his once legendary status in the music world. Alex Winter (Bill from Bill & Ted) directed a documentary about him that I actually backed on Kickstarter years ago. It's pretty good, but I'm not sure if it's streaming anywhere it the moment. But if you guys aren't familiar with Zappa's music, the albums "We're Only In It For the Money" and Joe's Garage might be the best places to start. I think it's time for Frank Zappa to get a little more love.
