It's time for a debate! We here at TRAPPO, the show that talks about stuff on purpose, have noticed you dear listeners have been asking us to talk about 2014's Black Widow from alt-metal superstars In This Moment for a while now, and we've finally gotten off our lazy butts and done just that! But we couldn't just handle this particular subject with a standard "spotlight" episode. No, the passion among you all is too big for something so limited. We needed to figure out a way to give you dear listeners the final word, while also keeping things fun for ourselves, so we've decided to hold our first ever TRAPPO Debate! On this very special episode, Dustin has taken the pro-Black Widow stance and Ky has taken the anti-Black Widow position, and we each make our case either for or against the album's inclusion in the illustrious TRAPPO Essentials Can(n)on, but the final decision isn't up to us, because you get to choose whose argument reigns supreme! Just take a gander at our official poll below and cast your vote today! Do you think Dustin's pro argument won the day, or were you swayed by Ky's con assertion? Vote now and let your voice be heard!

(As of 8-26-2022, the poll is now officially closed, and the results are in. By a margin of 55.2% to 44.8%, Black Widow from In This Moment has officially been inducted into the TRAPPO Essentials Can(n)on! -Dustin)

The episode itself is embedded below for your convenience, and you can also find it on Apple, Google, Pocket Casts, RadioPublic, Spotify and Anchor, so choose your own adventure and out of hell we will climb...

  1. I think Black Widow shines a much-needed spotlight on the mental health struggles so many go through that are completely unnoticed by too many people. "Out Of Hell" is a stirring composition, uncharacteristically gentle for Maria Brink, and the message behind it is uplifting and genuinely life-affirming. There is some truly beautiful work on display throughout Black Widow, and although even I admit it's certainly far from perfect, the positives vastly outweigh the negatives, and I also think Dustin made a stronger case overall. So even if I was voting based on the debate alone, I'd have to vote YES because of that. But I'm voting for inclusion in the can(n)on regardless, because Black Widow is deserving on its own merits.

  2. Half of Black Widow sucks. Maria Brink’s vocals are really all this band has going for it. Without her talents, they’re nothing. But even that’s not enough to make Black Widow a “great” album. I get what it’s trying to be, but it’s not very good.

  4. I’m not really a very big fan of this nu-metal stuff. There are some good moments throughout, and I agree that the overall message is definitely solid, but the music just doesn’t really do much for me. A lot of the beats sound weirdly generic to my ear, almost lifeless. The lead singer, Maria Brink, is the obvious highlight. She just goes for it every track, even if the end result ends up being disappointing. I had to vote in the negative because Black Widow never really takes off for me.

  5. Do people still care about In This Moment? I didn’t even know they were still around until a few days ago. I feel like the world’s moved on, but I’m not really into the whole nu-metal scene. It’s never worked for me. Black Widow’s the only ITM album I ever listened to, and I thought it was fine. Didn’t love it. Didn’t hate it. Just fine. As such, I don’t think it belongs in the canon, but I guess I won’t be upset if it gets the votes. I voted no, but I do t have strong feelings either way. Maybe if you nominated some Halestorm I could take a deeper interest. Hey! Maybe you guys could talk about Halestorm! There’s an idea!

  7. Thanks for finally getting to Black Widow! It's in the canon and I'm a happy camper! Now maybe you should think about tackling Halestorm? Maybe your next debate could be on 2018's "Vicious", their most acclaimed record. Think about that for a moment. Broaden your horizons and embrace the now. TRAPPO + Halestorm = Fuck Yeah!
