The Season Premiere! Essential Albums LIGHTNING ROUND!
Welcome back, dear listener, to the show that talks about stuff on purpose! It's TRAPPO, back and better than ever! And we've got a doozy of a season two premiere ahead. You may recall that we began our inaugural season with a bloated, two-part episode detailing some of our so-called "essential" albums, the kind of music that we would feel comfortable loading into a giant cannon and firing off into space in order to preserve a precious collection of our shared pop culture heritage. Thus, the illustrious TRAPPO Essentials Can(n)on was born, and history was made. Our first time around, we each brought five albums to the table, and we proceeded to ramble about each of our picks for quite a while, and to be completely honest the episodes are a bit difficult to sit through. That was not the best way to begin our brave new podcast, and I can admit that now. Mistakes, as they say, were made. But we've chosen to correct those mistakes with our season two premiere. This time around, we're not each bringing five albums to the discussion. We're bringing TEN. Now that may sound counter-intuitive, but fret not, dear listener. For this time, we have called down the thunder! This time, it's the Essential Albums LIGHTNING ROUND! We're not going to spend an inordinate amount of time discussing these twenty (okay, when I actually type that, it looks like a lot) albums. We're keeping things short and sweet, getting in and out in one episode, less than one hour in total length. That's pretty impressive for us. And there are bound to be a few surprises in store, so you're going to have to keep on your toes.
This is a very exciting time to be alive, now that TRAPPO's back in business! The episode is embedded below, and you can also find it on Apple, Google, RadioPublic, Pocket Casts, Spotify and Anchor, so choose your own adventure and let's open wide the doors to the TRAPPO Essentials Can(n)on once again!
Join the conversation! Leave a comment below telling us what you think of our picks, and while you're at it, leave some suggestions for future episode topics. Of course if you're feeling a bit more wordy, you could always send us a much appreciated email. And don't forget to follow us on Twitter and Instagram for the complete TRAPPO experience!
Before we part, in case you think I've forgotten the hotly anticipated results of our season finale poll, I was originally planning on sharing them in this post, but I've decided to save that for the opening of next week's Mail Bag, so you've got another week of anticipation ahead of you. The poll's closed, so no more voting is allowed, but I want to sincerely thank every single one of you who took a chance on the music we featured, and for casting your votes. We're very happy with the response, which makes us feel like we might be doing something right around here.
Thanks for listening, thanks for continuing to support the show, and thanks for being yourselves. We love you kooky cats, and we wouldn't still be doing the show without you.
KEEP TRAPPO WEIRD.
Good show!
ReplyDeleteYou put too much in the cannon! Just stuffing all the music in now. It’s become meaningless.
ReplyDeleteIt's an essential albums overload! I don't think I can disagree with any of the picks here, except maybe for No One's First, And You're Next by Modest Mouse. It's just not that strong an album. The Lonesome Crowded West, however, is just sublime. Never mind me, though. I'm just an old fool who has better taste in music. Welcome back, TRAPS.
ReplyDeleteI forgot to leave my recommendation! It's "Enemy" by Aeon Rings. Badass menacing synthwave. Put it in your fucking ears. Your brains will thank me.
DeleteCool premiere. Cool tunes. Cool new logo. TRAPPO has returned!
ReplyDeleteJean Dawson. Chaos Now. Just listen to it. Listen to the whole thing. I promise you it's good. CHAOS NOW.
ReplyDeleteThe entire Led Zeppelin catalogue is in the canon. Of course it is. Never change, TRAPS. And RUN DMC! I love it. It's a killer premiere altogether. Twenty albums (AND THEN SOME), it's a ton of fun to listen to, and it's a tight edit, so nobody can complain. People still can complain if they want to, but who cares, honestly? Fuck those people.
ReplyDeleteKeep TRAPPO weird!
I don’t know about you podcast people, but I enjoy the music of Fielded. Her coolest album has to be Demisexual Lovelace, but she recently released Medusa, which is also very cool. I don’t know how seriously you take recommendations on this show, but if you I hope you give Fielded a chance if you haven’t already.
ReplyDeleteI also enjoyed the show. I may have to listen to future episodes now. And who knows? Maybe one day TRAPPO will discuss the museum c of Fielded.
Maybe this doesn't fit your script, but since it's Halloween season why don't you guys talk a bit about the classic Monster Cereals: Count Chocula, Frankenberry, Boo Berry, Frute Brute and Yummy Mummy? They've become pop culture icons in their own right and that's a pretty big deal. How many people of a certain age have fond memories of eating this stuff for breakfast on Halloween morning?
ReplyDeleteWelcome back, TRAPS. I give this season premiere my official seal of approval. 👍 I honestly don’t understand the Mudvayne love, but we can’t always agree on everything, can we? It’s cool, though. It’s cool.
ReplyDeleteThe debut album from emerging artist Nessa Barrett dropped today, and although I haven’t yet had the chance to listen to the whole shebang, her previously released singles have been very solid work. Clever and confessional stuff with some fucking teeth, and that’s the kind of music I can appreciate. The single “madhouse” in particular is just great, and the official lyric video looks like a cobbled-together vintage film print using a bunch of different fonts that tell the song’s story. It’s hard to describe, so I would just encourage you to watch it.
Take a chance on Nessa Barrett, TRAPS. Do it for me. Do it for CJ. Do it for yourselves. Do it for each other. Do it all night long.
Sad Songs For Lonely People by Christy Hays. It’s a recent country thing. I don’t even know what we call this stuff anymore. I guess it’s technically country music, but it’s not the country music you hear on the radio. It’s not Dierks Bentley or Lady Antebellum. It feels like real country music. That kind of stuff that has a soul and a heart that’s broken by life and circumstance. Real music that you can feel radiating like heat from a fire. I like it. TRAPPO should like it.
ReplyDeleteI know I’m double dipping here comment-wise, but I didn’t recommend any music before. Keep it weird, TRAPS.
DeleteMudvayne SUCKS
ReplyDeleteBlackstar is one of the most important records of the past 20years. Think about what it means. The statement Bowie was making. Truly phenomenal work, and frighteningly effective. It belongs in EVERY canon.
